Journey to the Heart of Craft: Meeting the Wichi Artisans Behind our Woven Bags

At Casapacha, we believe in more than just beautiful products; we believe in the stories, the hands, and the traditions that create them. That's why a few weeks ago, I embarked on a truly special journey – a trip to meet the Wichi artisans in the Gran Chaco region of Argentina, the very people who intricately weave our Casapacha bags.

I have been in contact with these communities for more than six years now. This was my first trip to the communities, as they live in really isolated places, and we drove for days to finally meet them in person.

My brother came with me, and we quickly realised it was more than just a business trip; it was an immersion. Stepping into their communities, deep within the dry forests, we were immediately struck by the warmth and resilience of the Wichi people and their rhythm of life deeply connected to the land.

We spent the days listening, learning, and sharing. I witnessed firsthand the meticulous process behind each Casapacha bag, a tradition passed down through generations. The women gather the fibre from the native chaguar plant, a spiky bromeliad that grows in the Gran Chaco. They then patiently process it – stripping, drying, and twisting the fibres into strong, fine threads. This alone is a labour of love, demanding skill and dedication.

Then comes the weaving. Using ancestral techniques, often on simple backstrap looms. Each knot, each pattern, tells a story. We talked about the designs that often represent elements of their natural surroundings – the tracks of animals, and the river. They are symbols of their culture, their spirituality, and their deep connection to their environment.

We went from one community to another, and in all of them, the women work together. They share stories and laughter, and the children are always around.

It's a cooperative effort, where knowledge is passed from elder to child, ensuring the continuation of their invaluable heritage. We saw incredible dedication and pride in their craft.

This trip reinforced my commitment to these communities. The ethical sourcing that we have at Casapacha and the appreciation for the artisan's art.

Seeing the artisans at work, understanding the time, skill, and cultural significance woven into every single bag, deepened our appreciation immensely. Casapacha is not just about bringing unique, handmade items to you; it's about providing a sustainable livelihood for these communities, respecting their traditions, and celebrating their artistry.

Thank you for your valuable support!

Love,

Candela - Founder of Casapacha
